Peppermint Foods Warm Up A Cold Snowy Night

If there is one flavor that reminds us of the holidays and cold snowy weather, it is peppermint.  Peppermint is also a food of love; all of the mints have the old lore meaning of enhancing your wit.  It sharpens the mind and the senses and gives you sweet-smelling breath.

Here are some ideas for peppermint treats you can try to help sweeten the long cold nights with some delicious flavors.

A wonderful light and lush treat is a peppermint-layered cheesecake.  This is a layer of sour cream, peppermint cheesecake and white chocolate mousse frosting. You can make this from cream cheese, eggs, sugar, flour sour cream, vanilla extract and peppermint extract.  Crushed hard peppermint candies also can be added to the cheesecake layer.  The sour cream layers are made from a white cake mix that has been made with sour cream.  This in turn is layered with a whipped cream that has been fancied up with sugar and white chocolate morsels.   The whipped cream is the mousse that the peppermint cream cheese and sour cream cake is layered with.  You can also garnish this with white chocolate curls and peppermint candies.

Peppermint bark is also easy to make.  You can make it by melting white, dark or milk chocolate bark but the classic way to make it is with white chocolate.  You melt the chocolate with puffed rice sugar and w bag of crushed hard peppermint candies in a double boiler and then spread it out on a sheet and freeze it until hard.  The bark is then broken into pieces for eating later.

If you want to sample a unique winter cocktail then try to make a Peppermint Marshmallow Martini.  You dip the rims of the martini glasses in liquor and crushed peppermint candies to make a pretty rim on the glass.  Marshmallow sundae topping, 2 crushed peppermint candies, ice, vanilla vodka, peppermint schnappes and white chocolate liquor are shaken together over ice and then poured in glasses. Garnish with a miniature candy cane for a unique effect.

To warm up on a cold winter’s night try making Peppermint Hot Chocolate. This is hot chocolate spiced with peppermint oil and topped with whipped cream, shaved chocolate curls and crushed peppermint candy.  You can also make it with peppermint schnappes or peppermint-flavored vodka.

A simple yet cheerful treat is simply green crème de menthe poured over vanilla ice cream and topped with a pickled Queen Anne cherry.
